ASIA MISSIONS TEAM 2004

Cambodia
Capital – Phnom Penh People – 90% Khmer, 5% Vietnamese,
1% Chinese, 4% other Language – Khmer (official), French,
English Religions – 95% Buddhist, 5% other
Following
a five-year struggle, the Khmer Rouge forces took control
of Cambodia in 1975 and ordered the evacuation of all cities
and towns; over 1 million displaced people died from execution
or enforced hardships. When the Vietnamese invaded Cambodia
in 1978, there was civil war until the UN established peace
in 1991. Elections in 1993 helped restore some semblance of
normalcy and a coalition government, formed after national
elections in 1998, brought renewed political stability. Cambodia
still struggles with poverty, an illiterate population and
a lack of basic infrastructure.
What
are we doing?
We will be spending about a week in Phnom Penh (capital of
Cambodia) orienting ourselves to the people as well as the
culture there. The team will then be heading to Poem Treung
to do medical missions as well as teaching VBS at the Bright
Future School. We will then be going to revival meetings,
prayer walks, and evangelism outings. We will also have the
opportunity to serve the community of Kean Svay by doing service
projects. To finish our time there, we will be visiting and
supporting ministries around the Phnom Penh area.
